Keep Calm and Carry On: How to Manage the Fear of AI

This workshop will encourage participants to think about responsibly communicating AI without provoking some of the wilder Terminator-style fears. Run by the AI Narratives project (University of Cambridge and the Royal Society), it will build on the preceding keynote and panel.

The workshop will focus on three themes: anthropomorphisation (alternatives to portraying AI as metal men); loss of control (the myth of machines with ‘minds of their own’) and extremes (avoiding utopias and dystopian visions and instead normalising the role AI can play in our lives). This will be an interactive session.

Is democracy falling behind technology?

A healthy modern democracy requires ordinary citizens to participate in public discussions about rapidly advancing technologies. Technology is impacting and effecting change in the democratic process as more of the world comes online. The public outcry at the recent revelations of how Cambridge Analytica operated with unsolicited data from Facebook users has brought this timely conversation out into the open. Is it too late? Is it just the beginning? How do we design democracy for all in the age of technology? Join us in the Accenture Lounge for a lively panel discussion with Rumman Chowdhury, Responsible AI Lead, Accenture, Lord Tim Clement-Jones, Head of UK Government Affairs and Author Joshua Gans.

The chatbot landscape and how to stay informed

Julian Harris our Head of Technology Research rationalises the fast-paced and ever-changing chatbot landscape and the ways CognitionX can help keep you informed and plan your chatbot strategy with confidence.

Beyond the chatbot basics: advanced conversation design

These days it’s incredibly easy to create a chatbot. You don’t need to be a programmer and for some use cases you can create a chatbot in minutes. With 500,000+ chatbots in the world today, it’s clear that these low-friction on-ramps have given the world more exposure to the basic chatbot mechanisms. But it’s a lot harder to know why, when and how chatbots apply to more complex business situations. In this session we bring a range of cutting edge perspectives in this space: success stories in real world conversation design along with a showcase of some mechanisms to improve quality and flexibility of conversation design. In this masterclass overview, I and a panel of top leaders will be sharing our insights, covering the themes below:

  • What does a nontrivial conversation design look like in the real world and how does it evolve?
  • Rich understanding; what are some approaches to substantially improving the quality of chatbot understanding?
  • Alternatives to rule-based conversation flow: what are some approaches to constructing conversations that are working today? What is in the pipeline?
