Throughout my life I have faced a myriad of different mental health issues, from anxiety and panic disorder and depression to anorexia and bulimia. And this is far from rare amongst my peers. In Generation Z, whole friendship groups cover ranges of issues, from substance abuse to suicide. Closest to my heart are eating disorders, which at an all-girls boarding school are almost competitive sports. To raise awareness and create space for discussion, in my role as President of EmpowerHerVoice at Cheltenham Ladies’ College, I ensured a focus on this. Other topics to which spotlight was prioritised were intersectional feminism, a subsequent dismantling of white feminism, and shared parenting. Through years of therapy, an ineffective experience with medication, and being ultimately saved by a functional nutritionist, my mental health has dramatically improved, sparking a passion to increase conversation around/about it.
